The University of Chicago Medicine recently said it plans to reopen an adult trauma center on its South Side campus as part of a major expansion project.
The $270 million project will improve access to trauma care for residents on the South Side of Chicago.
The plan, called Get Care, aims to fill gaps in needed programs and boost access to other services.
Besides the trauma center, the new project aims to relocate and expand the adult emergency room and transform Mitchell Hospital into a cancer-care facility. More than 1,000 new jobs will be added as part of the expansion project.
“It's a dramatic step to increase access to health care on the South Side of Chicago, not just for trauma, but also to respond to the needs of the ER and complex care,” U. of C. Medicine President Sharon O'Keefe said. “We're making a huge investment in this project over the coming years.”
