Ameren Illinois' customers have stated that the company’s grid modernization has proven successful.
The customers have reported that they are having shorter and fewer power outages. The electric grid upgrades that Ameren has applied are part of Illinois’ Energy Infrastructure Modernization Act (EIMA).
Experts have estimated that the modernization changes will save the company’s customers approximately $48 million every year.
The modernization implementation first started in 2012. The first upgrades were storm-resilient utility poles, an upgraded distribution grid and automated switches.
"By all measures, the modernization plan is working for our customers and for Illinois," President of Ameren Illinois Richard Mark said. "Reliability has improved 17 percent, outages are down and good-paying jobs are being created at a time when our state sorely needs them."
Now, there is an average of 238,000 fewer yearly electricity service interruptions. When customers to have a power outage, the company is able to restore their power an average of 19 percent faster than before the upgrades.
"Today our customers have access to information that puts them firmly in control of their energy bills," Mark said. "Over time, the upgrades will help us detect and isolate outages faster, while giving our customers even more ways to manage their usage and contain costs."
