Chicagoland Chamber's Fitzgerald has op-ed published in Crain's Chicago Business

Crain's Chicago Business published an op-ed piece this week authored by Katie Fitzpatrick, executive director of programs for the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce.

In the piece, Fitzgerald draws on Chamber surveys and conversations with small business owners as she provides advice on running a successful business and attracting and retaining top talent in the Chicago area.

Fitzgerald's tips included:

-- Businesses without a human resources department should retain a high-quality lawyer to be sure basic rules and regulations are being followed.

-- Investment in technology platforms can free up employees for other duties.

-- Small firms should research and take advantage of free public resource initiatives.

"Last summer, the chamber launched an internship program in conjunction with CompTIA and Chicago Public Schools to provide assistance to small businesses that lack the budget or staff to address technology issues," Fitzgerald said. "In its first year, 12 businesses were successfully matched with students who helped create web pages and marketing platforms. This is one of numerous local initiatives that small businesses are invited to participate in free of charge."

Fitzgerald cited "a multigenerational, multicultural workforce" as the most important component of any business.

"Enjoy the benefits that dynamic skill sets and perspectives bring to your business and employee morale, including workforce retention," she said.
