Baxter International, Inc., headquartered in Deefield, Illinois, was honored recently for its sustainability practices for the 16th year in a row with inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
Additionally, the company's commitment to sustainability was illustrated by the launch of new programs aimed at giving young students experience in environmental issues, and providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention for younger people. The company also has started an initiative to minimize greenhouse emissions linked to its air travel.
The Dow Jones Sustainability Index, which began in 1999, examines how leading industries perform with regard to sustainability. Baxter is one of the few companies that has been included in the index each year since its inception.
Baxter is dedicated to building relationships, providing education and learning from environmental leaders. The company recently entered into a partnership with students from the University of Wisconsin to study the carbon footrprint left by renal dialysis clinics operated by Baxter.
The company also has begun to work with the Environmental Defense Fund's Climate Corps program.
"Baxter has benefited from the fresh perspectives and energetic approach these young scholars bring, and they have helped further our work on environmental sustainability,'' Art Gibson, vice president of environment, health and safety for Baxter, said.
Baxter is a global health care company with expertise in medical devices, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.
