Ground has been broken at Chicago's Midway Airport for a new urban boutique hotel, Best Western's Vib brand.
The groundbreaking ceremony, which took place November 4, was attended by David Kong, Best Western Hotels & Resorts president and CEO; Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel; Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives Michael Madigan; Chicago Ward 13 Alderman Marty Quinn; and the hotel's developer, Amit Patel.
"I am thrilled to be in Chicago breaking ground on Best Western's exciting new boutique concept," Kong said. "The Chicago hotel market is a perfect setting for this high energy, chic, urban hotel and will provide a contemporary hotel offering for today's traveler."
The price tag for the 74-room hotel, which will create 70 construction jobs and more than 22 permanent jobs, is $8 million.
"Midway Airport is a vital economic engine for Chicago and this new hotel will enable it to meet its growing passenger traffic so it can continue to drive job creation and economic growth for our entire city," Emanuel said.
Madigan pointed out that projects such as this will be good not just for Chicago, but for the entire state of Illinois.
"Attracting economic development projects to the state is critical in moving Illinois forward," he said.
"Alderman Quinn has been a tremendous partner in bringing this project to life," Patel said. "He saw our development plans and knew this would serve as a catalyst for the area — stimulating additional development and create a synergy with neighboring business."
