Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC), with campuses in Belleville, Granite City and Red Bud, said it recently was honored as a top educational facility for veterans.
SWIC, for the third year running, made Military Times magazine's Best for Vets: Colleges 2016 in the two-year schools category. The listing, now in its seventh year, includes 175 two-year, four-year, online and nontraditional schools across the United States. SWIC was also recognized as one of Victory Media's 2016 Military Friendly Schools.
“SWIC is once again the only community college in the state of Illinois to be recognized on the Best for Vets list,” SWIC President Georgia Costello said. “We are honored to receive both this and the Military Friendly designation, and take great pride in the services we offer our veteran students and their dependents. Supporting veterans and military families is one of our top priorities. Not only do we assist veterans and their dependents with obtaining federal and state education benefits, we offer additional support for long-term success.”
SWIC serves 2,700 men and women who have been in the military or their families each year. The school operates a Veterans & Career Services Center, provides a VetSuccess on Campus counselor and offers a new student orientation program for veterans.
SWIC also hosts an annual veterans hiring event at which more than 100 employers are connected with student veterans and veteran alumni.
“Those earning the 2016 Military Friendly designation demonstrate a strong connection between classroom learning and career development," Victory Media Chief Product Officer Daniel Nichols said. "They’re moving the needle beyond ‘why recruit military’ to translating military competencies into training and positive employment after graduation,” Nichols said.
