One of the major agenda items at the December meeting of the Northbrook, Illinois Village Trustees was the approval of the expansion of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates (WJE), a local engineering company.
WJE employs a team of engineers, architects and materials scientists who specialize in the design and repair of historic and modern buildings. The company has offices across the United States, but the Northbrook location is its national headquarters.
"Our headquarters have been located in Northbrook for nearly 50 years and this location has served us very well,” Steve Zimmerman, WJE senior associate and project manager, said. “We look forward to being part of this outstanding community for many years to come.”
WJE Northbrook is housed in four Sky Harbor buildings with a total space of 110,728 square feet. The expansion will update and increase the size of the company's laboratory. Company officials plan to invest $25 million to raze two of the buildings - 42,420 square feet of space - and build one 69,390-square-foot addition on another existing building.
WJE now employs 190 people at its Northbrook location; the expansion will create 68 new jobs. Further, it will increase tax income generated by the company from $3.7 million to $4.2 million over the next 12 years.
“This is a company that I do not want to lose,” Village President Sandy Frum said.
Construction could begin this year, and the projected completion date is spring 2018.
