OSF Healthcare's new Care-a-Van made its debut in Peoria recently, taking health care practitioners out into the community to serve those most in need.
Care-A-Van, the first mobile medical facility in the area, transports practitioners from the Faith Community Nurse Program and residents from the University of Illinois College of Medicine into neighborhoods to serve people who might not be physically able get to a doctor's office. The converted RV has two exam rooms and makes its rounds twice a month, currently focusing on the Southside and East Bluff neighborhoods.
"We really need to help people with health and wellness and prevention. And that's one of our primary goals," Nurse Manager Susie Smith said. "We've seen lines, we have lines of people waiting to see the doctor."
