Illinois American Water and Missouri American Water have been named finalists for the St. Louis Regional Chamber’s Ameren Corporate Citizenship Arcus Award for providing means for residents to safely dispose of unwanted medicines.
The award honors companies that show commitment to enhancing the quality of life in the St. Louis region.
Both utility companies operate programs that offer pharmaceutical drop boxes at police stations, health departments and city halls to help prevent drugs from being redistributed to others flushed into the wastewater system. Several tons of medicines are collected and destroyed each year through these programs.
The initial program began in 2008 in Illinois American Water’s Pontiac District with a model created by high school students.
Illinois American Water is a subsidiary of American Water and provides water and wastewater services to more than one million residents.
