The Southern Illinois Chamber of Commerce is offering an electricity and gas buying program for businesses, churches, industries and schools that would negotiate better rates.

Dynegy Inc. and Exelon Corp. will close three coal-fired electric power plants and two nuclear facilities, which could result in significant electricity price hikes in the future.

Negotiations are under way for chamber members that already participate in the Southern Illinois Chamber of Commerce bulk-buying group. The buying group is holding an open enrollment period for members who are not enrolled.

Chamber members who have not made a choice of electricity supplier and are on Ameren’s default rates, or chamber members with supply contracts expiring in the next year can contact the Salem Chamber at 548-3010, or affordable gas and electric representative Rob Wielt at 231-4904 for enrollment details.

After the enrollment period ends Aug. 12, the collective group of new enrollees will be bid to multiple suppliers seeking to seek the best long-term rate security.
