Ethisphere Institute has honored Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC) as a 2017 World’s Most Ethical Company, the second straight year it has been recognized. The health insurer received the honor earlier this month.
The Ethisphere Institute—which operates Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Illinois and several other states—promotes businesses around the nation that practice ethical business standards and the employees that follow them. HCSC is one of the three companies honored in the health insurance industry this year.
"It's always been our goal not just to say we have high standards, but to truly live our purpose and core values," Paula Steiner, president and chief executive officer at HCSC, said. "To encourage this, I interact directly with employees—from small group meetings to all-employee virtual town halls. Engaging employees this way helps build a culture based on integrity, respect, commitment, excellence and caring, which are all necessary to succeed in our changing and competitive environment."
HCSC’s accomplishments include many programs, including the Compliance Ambassador Program, which helps to create a strong workplace culture. HCSC says it is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace and promoting minority-owned companies.
"Our commitment to stand with our members in sickness and in health begins with operating our business ethically and with integrity," Tom Lubben, senior vice president and chief ethics and compliance officer at HCSC, said. "To be honored for the second year in a row reinforces our goal to empower our employees to uphold strong internal and external practices and provide the tools they need to do so even in challenging situations."
