Dr. Wasim Ellahi, a gastroenterologist at Illinois Gastroenterology Institute and Clinical Assistant Professor at University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria (UICOMP), was selected as the recipient of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award presented by the Gold Foundation.
The award was granted to Ellahi for his opening of the Córdoba Health Clinic, a specialty care clinic offering aid to individuals with poor or no insurance at low or no cost.
The Córdoba Health Clinic is located in South Peoria, opened in 2016, operates through the aid of volunteers who work in the areas of cardiology, gastroenterology and pediatric gastroenterology, oncology, pulmonology and nephrology.
In addition to Ellahi's award, eight individuals of the UICOMP Class of 2018 were chosen to be members of the Gold Humanism Honor Society: Gary Bhagat, Chancelor Cruz, Carley Demchuk, Joseph Krob, Saleha Mallick, Paulo Michelini, Mati Segev and Justin Steele.
All of the individuals listed were inducted last month at the Jump Trading Simulation & Education Center and will be recognized at the college's convocation next May.
