EP!C has raised its pay rates for direct support professionals to almost $11 an hour.
The nonprofit organization that services individuals with intellectual disabilities made this change in its Peoria location through advocacy efforts by the Workforce Coalition.
The coalition involves many organizations nationwide and has support from a number of state legislators, who approved the increase pay rate for the 2018 budget. This will allow the caretakers of the individuals to better take care of themselves and their families at home.
“This rate increase is long overdue and important to everyone within our community,” EP!C CEO Kim Cornwell said in a press release. “We advocate for a living wage for DSP’s who dedicate their lives to ensuring the people they support live the lives they want, regardless of their challenges.”
Agencies like EP!C last received an increase in wages for direct support professionals in 2008. Cornwell said she hopes the state will continue to raise the wage and help EP!C be more competitive in the marketplace.
“Though we are not where we’d like to be with this funding, we are happy that the state has taken a step forward in properly compensating our team,” Cornwell said. “This increase will also allow EP!C to be more competitive in the market in recruiting and retaining people who have a natural passion for helping others.”
